Congratulations to UBC RCPS-EM Resident Dr. Andrei Karpov who recently won the Top CAEP Resident Research Abstract Award! The project is titled: Validation of Trigger Tools and the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System – Cooperative Adverse Drug Events Surveillance Program (NEISS-CADES) algorithm for Identification of Adverse Drug Events in Emergency Department Health Records.

This was a planned sub-study of a prospective study conducted at Vancouver General Hospital and was conducted in collaboration with DEM faculty member, Dr. Corinne Hohl. The investigators applied trigger tools and the NEISS-CADES algorithm to included patient records and evaluated them in comparison to adverse drug events that were prospectively identified in these records by clinical pharmacists to calculate the sensitivity and specificity of trigger tools for identifying ADEs. Dr. Karpov will be presenting his findings at the 2014 CAEP conference in June.

Congratulations to UBC RCPS-EM Senior Resident Dr. Wailliam Lee, who won a CAEP 2014 Resident Research Award for his abstract submission titled: Effect of Triage Nurse Initiated Radiography Using the Ottawa Ankle Rules on Emergency Department Length of Stay at a Tertiary Care Center. This randomized trial was recently completed at Vancouver General Hospital, and the research team included DEM Faculty Co-Investigators Drs. Lyne Filiatrault and Riyad Abu-Laban. Wailliam will be presenting the results of this study at the CAEP Conference in Ottawa in June 2014, and the abstract will be published (along with a special mention of the award) in the Canadian Journal of Emergency Medicine. Developing and completing an RCT during residency training is a rare and impressive achievement; well done Wailliam!

Congratulations to UBC Family Practice Resident Dr. Erin Ryan and her DEM co-investigators Dr. Jeff Eppler (supervisor) and Dr. Riyad Abu-Laban. Dr. Ryan presented their study titled “FEARS: The Frail Elderly Admission Rate Study” at the UBC Family Practice Resident’s Research Day and won the David Lloyd Jones Research Award. This award provided Erin $1000, plus an additional $1000 when the study is published. FEARS was first discussed at DEM Research in Progress Rounds in October 2012, and is a great example of how Research in Progress Rounds can help advance a project from an idea through to completion.
