The UBC DEM Wilderness and Mountain Medicine Interest Group was established with the goal of becoming a central clearinghouse for information and ideas regarding academic activity in this subset of Emergency Medicine.
Backcountry and mountain recreation has always been popular in British Columbia, with population increases and societal trends accelerating its growth. With this comes a greater need for medical care for those injured and ill in these austere environments. That medical care can come from physicians within various organizations, such as Search and Rescue, Ski Patrol, and Expedition Medical Teams.
Those active or interested in the medical care described above are welcome to join this interest group, with the objective of creating a network for discourse pertaining to academic Wilderness and Mountain Medical activities such as research and elective opportunities. Another benefit of the Wilderness/Mountain Medicine Interest Group will be the potential for advice and/or mentorship from physicians experienced in this field for those wishing to embark upon it.
The Wilderness and Mountain Medicine Interest Group aspires to provide the UBC DEM with sound leadership in this field. Future goals may include development of a formal Division and a formal Fellowship in Wilderness/Mountain Medicine.
