Dr. Jeff Brubacher
Jeff Brubacher, Associate Professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine received the 2017 Noni MacDonald Award from the Canadian Pediatric Society.
Noni MacDonald Award recognizes an article in Paediatrics & Child Health journal that has positively affected paediatric medicine. This year’s prize goes to the lead author, Dr. Jeff Brubacher of the article published in the May 2016 issue of the journal. Titled “The impact of child safety restraint legislation on child injuries in police-reported motor vehicle collisions in British Columbia: An interrupted time series analysis”, it evaluates the effectiveness of 2008 legislation enforcing child safety seat regulations in that province.
Dr. Jeff Brubacher’s research focuses on road safety, with a special interest in impaired driving and traffic policy evaluation. He chairs the British Columbia Road Safety Strategy, Research and Data Committee, sits on the City of Vancouver Traffic Safety Advisory group, and was a member of the BC Coroner’s Service Teen Driver Death Review Panel. Congratulations to Dr. Michael Ertel to the role of Vice President, Medicine & Quality effective immediately. Dr. Ertel (Mike) is a practicing emergency physician at Kelowna General Hospital (KGH) and has been a highly respected member of the Interior Health medical community for more than 20 years. As a highly regarded speaker in Emergency Medicine, Mike brings energy, passion, and a track record for engaging and leading physicians to his new role.
Mike was awarded the position of Executive Medical Director for IH Central and South Okanagan last July, and was previously the KGH Chief of Staff from 2012 through 2016, the KGH Emergency Department Head from 2007 through 2011, and the IH Medical Director for Emergency Services. He has extensive clinical and leadership experience, spanning tertiary care through to rural family practice. Mike has been involved in clinical research, is a founding member of the IH Research Ethics Board, and has teaching experience with the UBC Southern Medical Program.

Congratulations to Dr. Jeff Brubacher and co-investigators Mark Asbridge, Rollin Brant, Herbert Chan, Shannon Erdelyi, and Scott MacDonald on their recently awarded CIHR grant ($845,325 over five years) for their study “Evaluation of the effect of cannabis legalization on road safety”. This project will continue Dr. Brubacher’s “Cannabis and Motor Vehicle Crash Risk” study in order to evaluate the effect of cannabis legalization on the prevalence of injured drivers who test positive for THC, the active ingredient in cannabis. The study will also refine estimates of motor vehicle crash risk at various THC levels.

The selection committee—comprised of Senior Executive Team members, directors and frontline staff—had the difficult task of evaluating the impressive entries based on the award criteria. CIHR funds CanROC to study Epinephrine Doses in Cardiac Arrest

Congratulations to the CanROC Research Team.
Led by Principal Investigator Paul Dorian in Toronto they have been successful with a $2.5 Million Dollar Grant from CIHR to study Epinephrine Dosing in Cardiac Arrest
The randomized controlled blinded trial will compare standard dosing vs low dose vs placebo.
This current dosing of epinephrine in cardiac arrest has no strong scientific basis. We do not know if it is helpful, harmful or ineffective for long term, neurologically independent survival.
BC will play a prominent role in the study which will involve multiple centers from across the country.

Dr. Quynh Doan Receives CIHR Funding

Congratulations to Dr. Quynh Doan and her team members, who include Dr. Robert Stenstrom, on their recent CIHR grant award (approximately $600K) to validate MyHEARTSMAP, a psychosocial assessment tool for use in the emergency department (ED). Although up to 70% of youth seeking care in the ED have an underlying mental health condition, only 10% seek help specifically for a mental health concern. When Emergency Physicians are unaware of mental health issues, they may not fully understand patients’s emergency care needs and potential response to treatment. Providing MyHEARTSMAP in the ED for families and youth to assess for mental health needs is anticipated to address an important clinical care gap.

Congratulations to DEM faculty members Dr. Jeff Brubacher and Dr. Kendall Ho for each being granted one of the 11 inaugural 2017 Health Professional-Investigator Awards from the Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research (MSFHR). This success is a major achievement, both for Drs. Brubacher and Ho, and for the DEM as a whole. The MSFHR Professional-Investigator Award provides funding to support exceptional health professionals focused on answering questions derived from their practical experience and clinical expertise.
Dr. Brubacher was recognized for his study titled: “Health related quality of life following road trauma: An emergency department inception cohort study”.
Dr. Kendall Ho was recognized for his study titled: “TEC4Home: Telehealth for emergency-community continuity of care connectivity via home monitoring”.
The recipients of this award represent health professions ranging from emergency physicians to midwives and psychologists across BC. More information on this award, and well as a full list of the 11 recipients, is available on the MSFHR website.

Congratulations to Dr. Kendall Ho on his successful Lawson Foundation grant

Professor Kendall Ho recently received a grant from the Lawson Foundation for his project “Mobile Digital-health for Activity and Wellness – mDAWN Kids: Using online comics, mHealth and wearables for type 2 diabetes prevention for middle years children through their Diabetes Funding Strategy”.
Funding from this grant will engage school age children from Grade 4 to Grade 7 in learning digital health skills – learning how to find appropriate health information on the Internet, using apps and sensors appropriately, living healthily enabled by using technologies appropriately and not overusing.
The Lawson Foundation has awarded Dr. Ho and his team $220,000 over 2 years.

The Honourary Life Membership Award recognizes a CAEP member who has made outstanding contributions and dedicated service to emergency medicine in Canada.
Dr. Vertesi’s continued contributions, including his work developing, championing and promoting the creation of the Advanced Life Support Paramedic training in British Columbia, have had a substantial impact in emergency medicine at the local, national and international level.
He is one of CAEP’s founding members, joining his colleagues in 1978 to create the voice of EM in Canada.
