Dr. Kendall Ho Awarded BC Medal of Good Citizenship

Dr. Kendall Ho, Professor at UBC Faculty of Medicine, Department of Emergency Medicine, was selected for a BC Medal of Good Citizenship.

BC Medal of Good Citizenship recognizes individuals who have acted in a particularly generous, kind or selfless manner for the common good without expectation of award.

In recognition of this extraordinary time due to the pandemic, the 2021 Medal of Good Citizenship were awarded to 32 recipients representing 17 British Columbian communities for going above and beyond in their response to the COIVID-19 pandemic.

“Dr. Kendall Ho is an accomplished and decorated emergency physician and a UBC professor who made outstanding contributions in two specific areas relative to the response to COIVID-19,” said Honourable George Heyman, BC Minister of Environment and Climate Change Strategy and MLA for Vancouver-Fairview who presented Dr. Ho with the award.

In March 2020, Dr. Ho set up a new virtual physician service to complement the BC 8-1-1 nurses’ line answering callers’ concerns with medical expertise using video conferencing. As of January 2022, the physician team, under Dr. Ho’s leadership, has provide advice to more than 65,000 callers. Dr. Ho also volunteered as a medical spokesperson for Vancouver Coastal Health using his command of Chinese languages to provide COVID-19 information and advice to Chinese community members experiencing language barriers.

“Both of these roles where above and beyond his usual work,” said Hon. George Heyman. “Dr. Ho’s contributions provided timely, relevant and impactful supports during the COVID-19 pandemic.”

About Dr. Kendall Ho

Dr. Ho is an emergency physician in Vancouver, a professor in UBC Department of Emergency Medicine, and the medical director of BC Ministry of Health HEiDi program. He leads Digital Emergency Medicine within the Department of Emergency Medicine and conducts research in virtual care and digital health. He is the chair of the new Digital Emergency Medicine Committee in the Canadian Association of Emergency Physicians and is a member of the Canadian Virtual Care Task Force.
