Clinical Faculty members are health professionals who primarily practice their professions outside of UBC. While their main contribution is teaching, involvement in academic administration and research is also encouraged and acknowledged. Below are the criteria for each rank of Clinical Faculty.
Clinical Instructor
Initial appointments at this rank usually last for 3 to 5 years. Reappointments may be granted for a period of 10 years and are subject to renewal upon review. To qualify for appointment or reappointment at this rank, a candidate must meet the following criteria:
- Demonstrates an interest in teaching and a promising beginning in the field.
- Has demonstrated competence in clinical practice and a willingness to relate practice to teaching.
- Provides at least a minimum academic contribution over a two-year period for reappointment.
Clinical Assistant Professor
Appointments at this rank may be made for up to ten years, renewable upon review. A candidate for appointment, reappointment, or promotion to this rank must meet some or all of the following criteria:
- Has demonstrated capability as a teacher.
- Has demonstrated competence in clinical practice and a willingness to relate his/her practice to teaching.
- Provides approximately 50 hours of academic contribution over a two-year period.
- Shows sustained effort to present clear and useful teaching sessions.
- Has made an effort to learn about teaching techniques.
- Is a member of appropriate local and provincial or territorial organizations.
- Has complied with any additional Department/School criteria identified in writing.
- Participates in administrative and/or service activities of his/her hospital, agency, professional organization, the FOM, and/or UBC.
- Participates in research as a primary investigator or in collaborative studies.
Clinical Associate Professor
Appointments at this rank can be made for a duration of up to 10 years and are renewable upon review. To be considered for appointment, reappointment, or promotion to this rank, a candidate must meet the criteria of the lower rank, as well as some or all of the following requirements:
- Consistently receives positive formal teaching evaluations.
- Holds a reputation as a highly competent clinician.
- Contributes over 50 hours of academic involvement over a two-year period.
- Developed expertise in their field, which may include a specialized professional skill.
- Actively participates in prominent roles within provincial, territorial, and national professional organizations.
- Complies with any additional criteria set forth in writing by the Department/School.
- Significantly contributes to the administration and/or service activities of their hospital, agency, professional organization, Faculty of Medicine (FOM), and/or the University of British Columbia (UBC).
- Frequently invited to share expertise at professional society meetings, continuing professional education programs, or other institutions.
- Participates in research as a primary investigator or in collaborative studies.
Clinical Professor
Appointments at this rank are typically held for a duration of 10 years, with the possibility of renewal upon review. A candidate seeking appointment, reappointment, or promotion to this rank must meet the criteria of the lower rank, as well as some or all of the following requirements:
- Demonstrates skills as an enthusiastic, effective, and dedicated leader within the educational program, receiving formal teaching evaluations that indicate excellence in teaching and a continuous ability to engage learners.
- Recognized by peers as an outstanding clinician who has made significant, documented contributions to professional practice in their hospital, agency, professional organization, the Faculty of Medicine, or the University of British Columbia.
- Provides over 50 hours of academic contributions over a two-year period.
- Has provided leadership in national or international professional organizations.
- Complies with any additional Department or School criteria identified in writing.
- Demonstrates distinguished service and/or leadership in committee work, administrative roles, or policy-making decisions in their hospital, agency, professional organization, the Faculty of Medicine, or the University of British Columbia.
- Participates in research as a primary investigator or as part of collaborative studies.
Clinical Emeritus
A Clinical Emeritus Appointment is an honourable recognition for faculty members in the Faculty of Medicine who have served for at least 15 continuous years and are over 65 years old. The process for awarding this title involves recommendations from the Departmental Committee on Clinical Appointments and Promotions, the appropriate Department Head, and ultimately the Dean, but it is not automatic and is assessed on a case-by-case basis.
Individuals can qualify for this status upon retirement or resignation, provided they receive endorsements from their Department or School and the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine. Additionally, they must meet all of the following criteria:
- A minimum of 15 years of continuous service is required.
- Candidates must hold the rank of Clinical Associate Professor or Clinical Professor, or demonstrate a scholarly record that meets the standards reviewed at both the Department/School and Faculty of Medicine levels, in accordance with established University procedures for equivalent positions.
- Service must be clearly associated with the University and considered deserving of ongoing recognition.
