Clinical Faculty Reappointments

Decisions regarding reappointment for Clinical Faculty will be based on established ranking criteria and a review of their activities. Faculty members should maintain an up-to-date record of their work, via Facutly of Medicine’s abbreviated CV. This information will be considered when making decisions about reappointment.

As your appointment approaches its end, the department will reach out to assess your continued eligibility for a Clinical Faculty appointment.

What is the process for reappointment?

As your Clinical Faculty appointment approaches renewal, the department will reach out to confirm your desire to continue in this role. To proceed, you will need to verify that the information we have on file is correct and submit an updated curriculum vitae (CV).

Within the last year of appointment, Clinical Faculty should confirm:

  • Intention to seek reappointment
  • Academic contributions for the past term
  • Continued empliance with UBC and FoM policies

What factors are considered when determining the renewal (or non-renewal) of a Clinical Faculty appointment?

The following factors will be taken into account during the review process:

  • Continuous affiliation with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia (CPSBC).
  • Maintained full practicing status with CPSBC.
  • Continued teaching contributions, with at least 50 hours of teaching within the last two years.
  • Voluntary non-renewal by the individual (e.g., resignations, retirements).
  • Diminished commitment to teaching activities.
  • Unprofessional or unethical conduct.

Leave of Absence (LOA)

Clinical Faculty may request a Leave of Absence (LOA) for reasons such as medical needs, parental leave, compassionate circumstances, or other personal matters, in accordance with policy. Faculty members who are planning to take a leave or are currently on leave are encouraged to contact Udani Perera for assistance and to keep the department updated on their status. Approved leaves will not affect the current appointment term; reappointment is typically considered upon return if the leave extends beyond the term.

  • Clinical Faculty are eligible for LOA for medical, compassionate, maternity, parental, adoption, or other personal reasons
  • LOA can be up to 1 year, with extensions up to 2 years
  • Written requests should be submitted to the Department Head at least 3 months in advance (unless waived)
  • Department Head will notify Clinical Faculty in writing; approvals should not be unreasonably withheld
