Dr. Riyad Abu-Laban Promoted to the rank of Professor

We are pleased to announce that Dr. Riyad Abu-Laban has been promoted to the rank of Professor, effective July 1, 2020.

Dr. Abu-Laban is an Emergency Physician at Vancouver General Hospital and the Scientific Director of the BC Emergency Medicine Network. He has a longstanding commitment to the advancement of Emergency Medicine as an academic discipline in Canada and internationally. As Research Director of the UBC Department of Emergency Medicine from 2009-2020, Dr. Abu-Laban provided academic mentorship to numerous DEM trainees, faculty members and career award recipients.

In 2011 he developed and launched an innovative one-month research education program entitled the “Novel Education in Research & Design (NERD) Block”, that has received consistently high evaluations, and has generated significant national attention. The NERD Block has continued annually at UBC for EM Residents, Pediatric EM Fellows, and interested DEM and Pediatric EM Faculty Members. Dr. Abu-Laban currently oversees a wide range of activities in the EM Network Scientific Program related to data access and the functioning of the EMN as a Learning Health System.

Throughout the course of his career, Dr. Abu-Laban has made significant contributions to teaching, graduate supervision, and research at UBC. His achievements within the field of Emergency Medicine have assisted the university in meeting its vision as a globally influential institution. We look forward to his continued success.
