Mission

Provide leadership in medical direction, training, quality assurance, program development and evaluation for the purpose of optimizing prehospital patient care
Construct an inclusive organizational vehicle to allow coordination and collaboration among a variety of individuals involved in prehospital care and scholarship
Create a framework to support and expand training opportunities specific to prehospital medicine
Support prehospital medical research by promoting and facilitating the conduct of ethical, relevant, valid and practical studies
Contribute to public policy development relating to prehospital care and be a strong advocate for public safety
Encourage innovation and inclusiveness of a variety of stakeholders by respecting and acknowledging the contributions of all interested individuals

Physician Advanced Education

PTM AFC Program (status pending)
The Prehospital and Transport Medicine (PTM) Area of Focused Competence (AFC) Diploma Program is a comprehensive 12-month training program that is guided by the program co-directors and taught by physician, paramedic, and other types of educators. This longitudinal experience provides the trainee with gradually increasing responsibility in medical leadership and the application of emergency medicine/critical care medicine in the out-of-hospital environment. The AFC program involves a dedicated experience that adheres to our curriculum plan of learning activities and acquiring key competencies. The completion of this program is a pathway to obtaining the PTM AFC Diploma recognized by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada*. At this time, we are unable to accommodate international applicants.

PTM Rotation
The PTM Rotation is a mandatory educational experience for RCPSC emergency medicine PGY-2 residents and an opportunity for postgraduate learners of other disciplines to immerse themselves in the PTM milieu both from the perspective of the paramedics and the PTM physicians. Our 4-week PTM rotation is comprised of didactic sessions and ride-along ground (and where available air) ambulance shifts. PTM rotations are conducted twice per year, in block 6 and block 11 of the UBC postgraduate medical academic calendar.

Off-Service Ride-Alongs
An observation-based opportunity for UBC postgraduate medical learners from a variety of residency and fellowship programs to gain exposure to the patient care operations of Prehospital & Transport Medicine. This will be scheduled over a 2- or 4-week time frame. Learners will partake in a variety of ride-along types and work with paramedics of different license levels and positions. (This MAY include: Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Life Support (ALS), Paramedic Specialist (PS), Critical Care Transport (CCT) and Infant Transport Team (ITT) shifts). Ride-along types are based on your program area.
