On April 9th, the Department of Emergency Medicine (DEM) hosted its 16th Annual Emergency Medicine Research Day at the BC Children’s Hospital Research Institute. The event brought together DEM and Pediatric Emergency Medicine (PEM) faculty and trainees to present their research in the field of emergency medicine.
This year, we welcomed over 157 participants, both in-person and virtually, including faculty, staff, researchers, residents, fellows, and students, making it one of our most attended events yet. The day was facilitated by Dr. Frank Scheuermeyer and Dr. Vikram Sabhaney, and featured compelling presentations and robust Q&A sessions, with a total of 29 presentations. Topics included opioid use disorder, COVID-19 challenges, equitable virtual care, pediatric emergency medicine, and more.
In addition, two insightful program presentations were featured. Dr. Corinne Hohl shared Emergency Care BC‘s initiative on “Improving ED Care through a Learning Health System,” while Dr. Sonya Cressman presented “Coordinating ED and Primary Care Using Predictive Analytics” from Digital Emergency Medicine.
We had the honour to host a special plenary presentation from our Visiting Professor Dr. Kerstin de Wit, a leading expert in Emergency Venous Thromboembolism and a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair at Queen’s University. Her insights on pulmonary embolism testing were well received by attendees and sparked an engaging Q&A session.
The winners of the Dr. Jim Berbee Award and the Dr. Riyad Abu-Laban Resident Abstract Award were announced at our event. The Dr. Jim Berbee Award provides funding for research by UBC emergency medicine residents, covering expenses for equipment, materials, student support, statistical assistance, and travel for presentations. Congratulations to the award recipients listed below!
