Dr. Jared Baylis receives inaugural Dr. Brian Chung Award for Outstanding Contribution to Residency Education

Congratulations to Dr. Jared Baylis, Clinical Assistant Professor with UBC’s Department of Emergency Medicine (DEM), for receiving the inaugural Dr. Brian Chung Award for Outstanding Contribution to Residency Education in the RCPSC-EM program.

Dr. Baylis, who also serves as an emergency physician at Kelowna General Hospital, was nominated for this award based on his commitment to residency education locally and across the provincial program, his innovative creation of a UBC simulation elective program, and his kind, humble and approachable leadership style.

“Dr. Chung spent many years as a world class program director of the UBC Emergency Medicine residency program,” said Dr. Baylis. “What an honour and surprise to have received the inaugural Residency Education award in his name.”

In addition to contributing to a high-quality, high-fidelity RCPSC accredited simulation program for local and visiting residents, Dr. Baylis works with the Interior Health simulation program facilitating mobile simulation in communities around the interior. He was also instrumental in leading the first UBC residency-wide procedure day in Kelowna. Further to his accomplishments, Dr. Baylis is widely regarded as a mentor for new physicians who goes above and beyond to provide residents with the support they need.

The Dr. Brian Chung Award for Outstanding Contribution to Residency Education was created in 2023 to recognize a UBC DEM faculty member who has contributed significant time and effort to UBC RCPSC-EM resident learning and wellness, has developed and/or implemented an educational initiative or program, and exhibits the important characteristics that are necessary to serve as a role model for both residents and peers in the residency program.

The award was named for Dr. Brian Chung, who previously served as UBC DEM RCPSC-EM Residency Program Director. A dedicated and enthusiastic educator, Dr. Chung was instrumental in shaping the program to become one of the leading emergency medicine programs in Canada. He is known for leading with humility, compassion, integrity and respect – just some of the qualities each award recipient should possess.
