2022 Academic Gown Ceremonies

On May 26, the Faculty of Medicine honoured colleagues promoted to the ranks of Professor, Professor of Teaching, and Clinical Professor, as well as those granted Emerita and Emeritus status in 2021/22. Brian Deady

Clinical Professor

Dr. Brian Deady was promoted to Clinical Professor with the Department of Emergency Medicine effective July 1, 2021. He has been with the Faculty for 16 years. His scholarly interest lies primarily in the medical humanities where he has published patient-centred stories in journals such as CMAJ and CJEM throughout his career. He is a member of the Royal Columbian Hospital (RCH) Airway Committee, an interdisciplinary collaboration which provides local, evidence-based guidelines for airway management and is the first of its kind in Canada. Deady is active in undergraduate teaching at RCH and derives his greatest joy at work teaching medical students at the bedside.


Joseph Finkler

Clinical Professor

Dr. Joseph Finkler was promoted to Clinical Professor with the Department of Emergency Medicine effective July 1, 2021. He has been with the Faculty for 20 years. Dr. Finkler has provided significant service to the community, including his ongoing work as a physician at the Vancouver City Jail and serving as a Medical Consultant for International SOS Canada since 2017. In addition to his contributions to the community, Dr. Finkler also served as the Associate Dean for the UBC MD Undergraduate Admissions Office. Dr. Finkler is a dedicated educator and has won several awards for this teaching, including the William Webber Award by the UBC Medical Undergraduate Society.


James Goulding

Clinical Professor

Dr. James Goulding was promoted to Clinical Professor with the Department of Emergency Medicine effective July 1, 2021. He has been with the Faculty for 17 years. Dr. Goulding has been highly involved with teaching at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels and consistently receives positive feedback on his teaching. Dr. Goulding has been the Discipline-Specific Site Lead for Emergency Medicine at the Island Medical Program since its inception. He has a number of peer reviewed publications and most recently has participated as a regional investigator for several Resuscitation Outcomes Consortium trials. A presenter at national and regional conferences, his contributions have enhanced his specialty and promoted better patient care.


Robert Stenstrom

Clinical Professor

Dr. Robert Stenstrom was promoted to Clinical Professor with the Department of Emergency Medicine effective July 1, 2021. He has been with the Faculty for 19 years. Dr. Stenstrom is a practicing Emergency Medicine Physician at St Paul’s Hospital and holds a PhD. in epidemiology and biostatistics from McGill University. He was research director at St. Paul’s for 12 years until 2018. Dr. Stenstrom’s research and teaching interests include infectious disease, sepsis and septic shock. Dr. Stenstrom is an active researcher with 88 peer reviewed publications. He is the Innovation Program Lead, Sepsis and Soft Tissue Infections, for the BC Emergency Medicine Network.


Leslie Vertesi

Clinical Professor

Dr. Leslie Vertesi was promoted to Clinical Professor with the Department of Emergency Medicine effective July 1, 2018. He has been with the Faculty for 39 years. His areas of special interest include pre-hospital care and EMS, and health care modeling. Dr. Vertesi has been very involved in teaching at the undergraduate and postgraduate level at Royal Columbian and Eagle Ridge Hospitals. Dr. Vertesi was awarded the Lifetime Membership Award for Outstanding Achievements in Emergency Medicine in 2017 and the Honourary Lifetime Medical Staff Membership from Fraser Health Authority in 2019. Dr. Vertesi continues to be prolific with contributions to 13 refereed journal articles and one textbook to date.
