Dr. Andrew Smith is an emergency medicine physician and engineer with over 12 years clinical experience. He is the co-founder and CEO of JVPLabs—a start-up company focused on developing innovative technologies designed to enhance care for patients with congestive heart failure. Andrew has guided the team at JVPLabs advance through research & development, quality system implementation (aligned with ISO13485), ethics approval, non-dilutive financing, and regulatory approvals. JVPLabs is currently completing their First in Human study.
Dr. Smith has significant interests in health innovation and entrepreneurship. Specifically, over the last several years he accomplished the following:
- Conceived, planned and helped implement a biomedical engineering stream at Memorial University, St. John’s Newfoundland.
- Co-founded Bounce Health Innovation—a catalyst for health innovation that helped seed the emerging medical technology sector for the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador.
- Worked to align of health innovation strategies for several large organizations, including Memorial University, Eastern Health, and the Provincial Government of Newfoundland & Labrador.
Recently, Andrew relocated to Vancouver where he is working as an emergency medicine physician at the Richmond emergency department while growing JVPLabs. In addition, Andrew is an engineer having completed a master’s degree in computer vision prior to his medical studies. He secured early promotion to the rank of associate professor, acquired $1.5 million in research funding, published over 20 peer-reviewed publications and 1 book chapter, and has conducted countless presentations.
Most recently, Dr. Smith’s sole focus has been on developing a home monitoring solution for congestive heart failure and growing JVPLabs as a company as well as his emergency medicine practice.
