Invitation to Participate in the DEM Mentorship Program

The Department of Emergency Medicine (DEM), the Offices of Faculty Affairs and Clinical Faculty Affairs, and UBC Division of Continuing Professional Development (UBC CPD) invite DEM faculty members to participate as a mentor in our second edition of the DEM Mentorship Program. 100% of our mentors agreed or strongly agreed that they would recommend the program to a colleague and potential mentor. Please note that more information will follow in a few weeks to recruit mentees.

“My mentee and I were quite well matched in terms of interests and experiences. I benefited from the ability to support and guide a colleague and share my experiences.” (2020 Mentor)

The purpose of this DEM mentoring program is to support the career goals of DEM Members in the areas of administration, leadership, early career/transition into practice, clinical medicine, medical education, professional development, physicians’ wellness, and to enhance overall engagement within the DEM and the UBC Faculty of Medicine. We are looking for emergency physicians who have experience navigating the DEM, the Faculty of Medicine, or are experienced physicians in their field.

Mentors will benefit from the program through the fulfillment and satisfaction that will come from assisting a less experienced colleague. Mentors will also receive leadership training and ongoing support during the program. The time commitment is approximately 18 hours over the eight-month program. You will receive CME credits for your participation in the program.

Once you apply, program staff will create profiles for mentors based on information included in the application form and, following your review, these will be circulated to mentees. Mentees will rank their preferred mentors and we will use these rankings to match mentors and mentees. We recommend that over an eight-month period, mentoring pairs meet 10 times (either in person, by telephone, or online, depending on mentor’s location). Each mentoring pair will be able to negotiate most aspects of the relationship including the frequency, length, and format of meetings and scope of the relationship. With your guidance, mentees will create learning goals that will guide discussion in mentoring meetings.

Please note that we are intentionally creating a larger pool of mentors to facilitate the best compatibility of each mentoring pair. As such, not all mentors in the pool will be chosen to participate in the program. However, those individuals will be included in the pool for future iterations and may be called upon as experts in their specialty areas throughout the program.
