
The Department of Emergency Medicine is excited to announce a career opportunity for the position of Associate Program Director, RCPSC-EM Residency Program, Vancouver, with an expected start date in January 2026.
The Associate Program Director, RCPSC-EM Residency Program, Vancouver is responsible for the day-to-day administration of the residency program at their site. They ensure the site complies with program accreditation standards. They create and maintain a supportive learning environment where trainees thrive and receive an exceptional educational experience. The Associate Program Director fosters an inclusive culture that promotes diversity and upholds the values of respect, integrity, compassion, collaboration, and equity.
Appointment Details
This is a 0.5 FTE position (2.5 days/week) for a five-year term, subject to renewal. The incumbent must have sufficient protected time during the working week to fulfill the requirements of this role.
The appointee may serve up to two consecutive terms, contingent upon satisfactory performance and alignment with departmental goals.
Reporting Relationships
The Associate Program Director, RCPSC-EM Residency Program, Vancouver reports to the Provincial Director, RCPS-EM Residency Program. The Associate Program Director will provide direction and functional supervision to the site Program Coordinator.
Responsibilities
- Site Oversight: Oversees the day-to-day administration of the residency program at site. Collaborates with the Provincial Director and site Associate Program Directors to ensure alignment. Works closely with the site Program Coordinator to ensure efficient and effective operations and provides guidance and direction, as needed.
- Accreditation: Ensures site is meeting accreditation standards mandated by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. Keeps Director abreast of any potential areas of concern and works collaboratively with program leadership to address issues. Assists with preparation for accreditation reviews and provides requisite site materials for this purpose.
- Residency Program Committee (RPC): Regularly attends and participates in the RPC. Chairs the site RPC and ensures terms of reference is aligned across sites and membership is kept up to date.
- Curriculum: Supports the development of a clear program plan, including objectives relating to knowledge, skills, and attitudes and based upon the general objectives of training in the specialty as published in the Specialty Training Requirements of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. The plan should also indicate the methods by which the objectives are to be achieved and the role played by each participating institution.
- Competency Based Medical Education (CBME): Provides site leadership for CBME. Implements new curriculum at site and supports residents.
- Academic Day: Supports the development of Academic Day and its relevant components.
- Scholarship: Implements scholarship education and ensures resident participation in opportunities.
- Admissions: Selects candidates for admission to the program site through the Canadian Residency Matching Service (CaRMS). Ensures that the CaRMS selection process for learners belonging to equity-deserving groups is fair, inclusive, and equitable.
- Assessment: Ensures residents are advancing and gaining experiences and responsibility in accordance with the educational plan. Conducts regular reviews of individual resident performance and provides assistance, remediation, and extra educational activities for improvement, as needed. Oversees and assists in the development and reviews of the twice per year Canadian In-Training Examination of residents at site and monitors resident scores and progress. Ensures residents have access to Practice oral exams on an annual basis with increased opportunity in the PGY5 year.
- Faculty Assessment: Ensures resident assessment of teaching faculty is completed on a regular basis, assuring confidentiality according to the size of the resident cohort at the site. Provides feedback to faculty and follows up with hospital site chief, Provincial Director, or Department Head, as necessary.
- Career Planning: Implements mechanisms to provide career planning and ensure access to continuous professional development for residents.
- Resident Well-Being: Provides residents with appropriate counselling support, as needed. Advocate for the well-being of residents and seek assistance for remediation support, escalating requests for resources, as needed.
- Appeals: Ensures residents are aware of the process for appeals.
- Continuous Quality Improvement: Participates in regular reviews of the program to assess the quality of the educational experience, best use of available resources, implementation of the assessment system for resident performance, and the effective administration and operations of the program at the site.
- Financial: Manages site program funding. Ensures site expenses follow policies developed at the program level. Identifies and escalates requests for funding, where needed.
- Committee Representation: Attends relevant committees such as Canadian Association of Emergency Physicians Program Directors committee and Specialty Training Committee of the RCPSC, where possible.
Qualifications
- Holds a faculty appointment in the Department of Emergency Medicine
- Certified in Emergency Medicine
- Licensed by the BC College of Physicians and Surgeons
- Holds a hospital appointment as an emergency physician at Vancouver General Hospital
- Collaboratively spirited with excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Strong leadership skills and able to effectively respond to new and complex issues
- Demonstrated ability to champion the principles of anti-racism, equity, diversity, and inclusion
- Demonstrated commitment to continuous quality improvement
- Able to negotiate, mediate conflicts, advocate, and resolve problems
