2021 Academic Gown Ceremonies

On June 22nd and June 30th, the Faculty of Medicine honoured colleagues promoted to the ranks of Professor, Professor of Teaching, and Clinical Professor, as well as those granted Emerita and Emeritus status in 2019/2020 and 2020/2021. Riyad Abu-Laban

Professor

Dr. Riyad Abu-Laban has been on Faculty for 25 years. His wide research interests include cardiac arrest resuscitation, wilderness and environmental medicine, Emergency Medicine (EM) training and certification, clinical networks, and international EM. Dr. Abu-Laban is a passionate educator, and was awarded a Killam Teaching Prize in 2015. He was instrumental in ensuring future emergency physicians have research and critical appraisal skills through establishing an innovative 1 month initiative, “Novel Education in Research and Design” (NERD). This remains a core course in the UBC EM residency and Pediatric EM fellowship programs.


Bruce Campana

Clinical Professor

Dr. Bruce Campana has been with the Faculty for 34 years and has been active in undergraduate, postgraduate, and continuing medical education teaching. For 23 years, he did presentations at secondary schools throughout the province about drinking and driving, and was involved in several videos about youth and safety. His areas of interest include hyperbaric medicine, wellness, and physician support/discipline. Dr. Campana’s latest initiative is to develop a province-wide physician support and discipline guideline that would allow standardization throughout the Health Authorities.


Devin Harris

Clinical Professor

Dr. Devin Harris is a Clinical Professor with the Department of Emergency Medicine and member of the Faculty for 19 years. His scholarly and teaching interests include cerebrovascular diseases, quality improvement and patient safety, and health care leadership. He has been active in undergraduate and postgraduate education and on multipule occasions has been awarded Clinical Teacher of the Year by the CCFP-EM Residency Program. Dr. Harris is the Executive Medical Director of Quality and Patient Safety for Interior Health and is Chair of the B.C. Patient Safety and Quality Council, providing tremendous leadership for quality and patient safety in B.C.


Adam Lund

Clinical Professor

Dr. Adam Lund has been with the Faculty for 18 years and is an internationally recognized expert in Mass Gathering Medicine (MGM). He has led research and training in this area, and contributed to policy including: a provincial Major Planned Events Guide, a national position statement on drug harms at music festivals, bylaws in the Municipality of Edmonton, and recommendations on mass gatherings within the Saudi Arabian Ministry of Health. He continues to participate in the work and publications of the World Health Organization’s Collaborating Centres on Mass Gatherings.


Andrew MacPherson

Clinical Professor

Dr. Andrew MacPherson has been with the Faculty for 14 years and serves as the Chair of the College of Family Physicians of Canada EM Exam committee. Dr. MacPherson actively works to improve care for British Columbians by strengthening prehospital medicine and strengthening relations between BC Emergency Health Services and health authorities. He is the Medical Director for Canadian Red Cross and Canadian Coast Guard, and received the National Order of Red Cross in 2015. In 2019, Dr. MacPherson was awarded the Canadian Association of Emergency Physicians “Emergency Physician of the Year” award.


Kevin McMeel

Clinical Professor

Dr. Kevin McMeel is a Clinical Professor with the Department of Emergency Medicine. He has been with the Faculty for 14 years. His scholarly and teaching interests include point of care ultrasound, and sports medicine. He has been active in undergraduate teaching and in resident education in a rural setting. Dr. McMeel has developed and is currently the director of the Nanaimo Emergency Education Program, a three-month fellowship in emergency medicine for non-urban based physicians. Instrumental in the expansion of the CCFP-EM Residency Program outside of the lower mainland, he is the program lead for the Nanaimo and Northern regional sites.


Harold Schubert

Clinical Associate Professor Emeritus

Dr. Harold Schubert has been with the Faculty for 36 years and has taught medical students, residents, practicing physicians, and nurse practitioner students. His research area of interest was in wrist and shoulder injuries. He was the first editor for the Canadian Family Physician, Clinical Challenge EM section. Dr. Schubert served as the Director of the Department of EM and the Medical Manager for the Urgent Care Centre at UBC Hospital.
