A new study by Dr. Louise Cassidy explores factors affecting trainee commuter safety

Louise Cassidy

We are proud to share that UBC Emergency Medicine RCPSC-EM Resident, Dr. Louise Cassidy, along with co-authors Emma Croft, Shannon Erdelyi, and Dr. Jeffrey Brubacher recently published a paper entitled “Motor vehicle incidents in postgraduate trainees in British Columbia” in the Canadian Medical Education Journal. This project was designed throughout Louise’s time as a participant in the UBC Emergency Medicine Novel Education in Research and Design (NERD) block where residents develop and refine a research project.

For this project, Louise was awarded the Resident Innovation Fund for Scholarly Pursuits in 2018 from the Resident Doctors of BC. Louise hopes this research will shed light on the important issues of work-hours, fatigue, and motor vehicle incidents in Canadian postgraduate medical trainees and will support the implementation of scheduling improvements and commuting alternatives to keep our trainees safe.
