Vancouver Island

As a resident in Victoria, you will be based at both Royal Jubilee Hospital (RJH) and Victoria General Hospital (VGH). For years now, a portion of anesthesia, radiology and ophthalmology residents have spent their first year in Victoria; all the emerg docs and staff are extremely excited to have more residents starting now that two FRPC emerg residents have landed in Victoria. Victoria site residents are seen as team players in developing the early stages of an exceptional emergency medicine-driven residency program.

The structure of the program is similar to that of the Vancouver site, but will be adapted to suit the local needs of the residents in Victoria (yes, your feedback will create change!). Journal club, ECG rounds, simulation sessions, practice examinations, and elective opportunities are equal across all sites. Academic day will rotate through all sites, where sites that are not hosting will attend via videoconference. Please visit the Vancouver Island Site Program Overview for more details on this program.

VGH is a level 3 trauma center while RJH is a 500-bed hospital that offers a variety of acute medical and surgical patients. Combined, the hospital EDs see 90,000 patients per year. With unique pathology and an enthusiastic staff, it is no wonder EM residents from Vancouver have been enjoying their CCU and CTU rotations there for years.

Find fresh powder on the slopes of Mt. Washington, reel in your first spring salmon, bike to work year round, wander amongst some of the biggest trees on the planet, kayak with killer whales, golf on award winning greens or hike one of the many famous trails. Vancouver Island is a slice of paradise. Living on the south island, you’ll find yourself surrounded by sandy ocean beaches, dense rain forests and a laid back west coast vibe. Plus, you’ll enjoy noticeably less rain compared to the infamous lower mainland throughout the mild winter season. Summers are warm, dry and exceptionally sunny.

The city of Victoria itself is a foodie’s dream with cafes and tapas restaurants that rival some of Vancouver’s finest. The downtown core is saturated with local artisans' arts and crafts shops, all of which are steps from the scenic harbor. When it comes time to travel to Vancouver, residents are refunded for accommodation and the cost of float plane tickets. Residency here will offer you an opportunity to live a balanced life in a community where you can truly make a difference and successfully learn the skills to be an exceptional emerg doc!
